Acoustic Textures

Finished putting together the first bunch of the solo acoustic guitar CDr I’ve been working on for ages today!

Comes inside a zine with a heavy sleeve with risograph print on front and back cover in teal, 4 pages inside with drawings, physical rubbings more than drawings but made with a pencil of the objects I used in playing the instrument on the recording, 7 tracks, 33 minutes long. £5 get in touch on davidmbirchallatgmail.com if you are interested and for a postage quote.

AL/CP tour

Just back from righteous tour with Acrid Lactations. Excellent snap by Susan from Chastity Potatoe set at Newcastles Morden Tower. Note Bob Cobbing poster in background. That one cost 5 shillings to get in. Also presence of Allen Gisnberg lurking somewhere or another.

Facebook set here from Sue. Also look out for her killer illustrated tour diary to appear in near future!

Rock out in Leeds captured by Fiona. Shortly before yellow tape incident.

The Skipton Crypt set snapped by Jazz Tourist.

Acoustic Textures

Beavering away in the studio today folding and stapling covers and the insides for a mini zine that will house the first physical solo release I’ve put together.

It’s about 40 minutes of acoustic guitar and objects recorded at the end of 2010.

The zine contains drawings of the stuff used to make the sounds.

Track listing is as follows:

1. signs of hope on our archipelago

2. prevailing winds & city smells

3. another apocalyptic vision at breakfast

4. play as parable

5. bottom up not top down

6. new works in trouser jazz

7. sustainable sounds

Originally I was aiming to have it out for Chastity Potatoe/Acrid Lactations our mid-July but more likely to appear mid- August now.

Creative Hive performance

Short piece from performance on Tuesday improvising at the Creative Hive event with Naomi Kendrick drawing, Dan Bridgwood-Hill on synth and Paddy Baxter filming. The film here taken by Andrew Brooks. All happen in an amazing television studio inside the Salford University chunk of Media City.

This excerpt is from the second much calmer piece  we did that afternoon. The first one brought up some pretty interesting questions within the group of us working together which I’m interested to explore more in future performances. Mainly around the nature of sounds Naomi maybe be making as she draws, the idea of silence and space in our performances and the idea of accepting that the nature of the work we are making may sometimes require it to failure or collapse publicly in performance. There was also talk about busking which I’m rather excited about!

Feb tour photos

Gig in Brighton at Greendoor Store

Really wish more service stations were as ramshackle and splendid as this one somewhere in Shropshire.

Live in the Town Hall at Bishops Castle, Shropshire.

Good times in the Hotspur lift.

From the Jazz Services funded tour we did with the Birchall Brice Marks Trio in Jan/Feb of this year. We have a couple of dates coming up later in this month, details in the live section.

Thanks to Nick Dobson for these shots and the driving.
